Where's a fairy godmother when you need one?

So I've been having one of those weeks where it seems like every sewing project I start is cursed.  I should really step away from the machine, and I will, but first I have to figure out what to do about my current mess.

So Anna and John will be attending a father-daughter Sweetheart Ball this weekend.  How cute, right? So I ambitiously decided to make her a dress.  I have a stack of Oliver & S patterns I've bought via recent sales, so I decided to make the School Photo dress and ordered some silk poplin online.

While I was trying the dress on Anna to check the sleeve fit, John made a face--he now SWEARS it wasn't about the dress, but I think that he's just backtracking, and I'm too close to the project to judge.  It was a difficultish pattern, anyway, and sewing it in a silky fabric didn't help matters.  I got worried I was sending Anna to the ball in something that looks like a grandma's nightgown, so I rushed over to JoAnn fabrics and tried to come up with a new plan.  That's pretty much always a recipe for disaster, but I now have a second dress option.

So, without further ado, here's Look 1.  Let's call her "Jackie":

And here's Look 2 (which is the Chloe pattern from Violette Field Threads).  I was going to call her "Marilyn" but I think "Shirley Temple" is more appropriate:

Side-by-side:

Anna thinks Shirley is all that and a bag of chips, but hello, it has a twirly skirt.  I'm slightly biased toward Jackie, because she was a whole lot of work, but I also broke 3 needles on Shirley's skirt, so I guess it's a toss-up.

And if you hate them both, there is always option 3, which is Anna's purple Christmas dress from Gymboree.  Go ahead, my feelings will not be too hurt--she'll be more than happy to use Shirley as an "Angelina Ballerina" dress, and she can probably wear Jackie for Easter.

So what do you think?

She is the cutest kid ever. Both dresses are fabulous. I love the Jackie and she is rocking it in the pictures. But I can see how a three-almost-four-year-old might prefer the poufy skirt, and she looks so sweet in it. Maybe better for a ball?

PS -- I love a dress with pockets; looks like Anna does, too. =)

Wow, I love them all.
Good luck with making that decision. Is there going to be dancing?? Do you get to go and take pictures? Somebody better take pictures cause I really want to see them. I can't believe how ambitious you are with your sewing projects. You definitely take after Aunt Mary Jane!!!

I love that last picture of Will and Anna. I need a 5 by 7 of that one.

I'm just now looking at the larger pictures and noticed the pretty lining of the Jackie dress. It's like Anna has her own couture collection going on there.

Nice work! Of course having such a beautiful model doesn't hurt! I think Jackie is more chic--love the picture where Anna has her hands in her pockets!

I would agree with Missy's original comment. I love the "Jackie" dress!!! Anna sure knows how to pull off both looks amazingly! I love the Shirley Temple dress too!! What Missy said about at her age prefering the twirly one, and for a ball...I could see where it could win. Either way I would go with one of the ones you made :) Use the "Jackie" dress for Easter and consider it planning ahead! Can't wait to see pictures from the Father/Daughter dance!!
